Ms. Gwendolyn B. Hillman - Ellis

Gwendolyn Baker Hillman - Ellis was born on December 06, 1950 to Walter and Marie Baker in Augusta, Georgia. “Gwen” as she was affectionately known, attended Wayne County Training School. She graduated high school in 1968. Gwen was a member of the House and Worship and Ministries of Jesup, GA. Gwen was passionate about cooking and feeding others. She put love into every dish she prepared. She worked as a cook at several local restaurants in Jesup, Georgia, which included The Kiwi Restaurant until her retirement. Gwen had the gift of creating beautiful things. She enjoyed catering, decorating, and collecting vintage pieces. Gwen found her greatest joy in loving people. She had the ability to connect with people that were often invisible to others. Gwen will always be remembered for her delicious food, bright personality, and having a big heart.

Gwen passed away after an extended illness on July 1, 2023 at Augusta University Hospital in Augusta, GA.  She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Willie Ellis. Also, in her first union, she, and her late former husband Marvin Hillman, had two children, Marva, and Tiffany. Gwen was also preceded in death by both parents.

Those left to cherish her memories (2) daughters; Marva Hillman Merritt (Bruce), Stockton, GA. and Tiffany Hillman, Jesup, GA., (4) granddaughters; Orianna, Victoria, Jasmine, & Kaia Merritt; Cousins (like sisters), Susie Grierson, Hazel Green, Linda Marcus, and Sara Renee Holland; “Special” cousin Betty Joe Wright; “adoptive” sister; Dorthy Johnson; “special friends”, Rosa Lee Hutchinson, Bonnie Deen, and Eugene Spangler; “special confidant,” Marilyn Sallas; “favorite friend;” Katherine Green, and a host of other relatives and friends that will miss her dearly. She also held a special place in her heart for Ms. Addie Mae Robinson. Ms. Robinson was her role model.

A celebration of life will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 8, 2023, at the House of Worship and Ministries (1920 Lanes Bridge Rd, Jesup, GA 31545) with Pastor Mickey Tomberlin officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 7, 2023, at the Community Chapel Funeral Home of Jesup (2524 S US 341, Jesup, GA 31546).

Ms. Hillman - Ellis will lie in state an hour prior to service time.
